We are California farmers of color advocating for civil rights in agriculture
The California Farmer Justice Collaborative (CFJC) is a nonprofit founded by a group of farmers and advocates, who came together in 2017 in a grassroots effort to pass the Farmer Equity Act (AB 1348).
The Farmer Equity Act changed California Food and Agriculture Code, directing the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) to better provide resources, outreach, technical assistance, and decision-making power to growers of color. It also added a definition of Socially Disadvantaged Farmer and Rancher to the California Food and Agriculture Code.
our vision
We envision farmers and land stewards of color centered at–and directing–a food and farming system that is built from a foundation of justice and equity.
We define Justice as: The repairing of historical oppression by amending policies and redistributing resources.
We define Equity as: Having the power and accountability to define our role in the larger food system.
We unite farmers, advocates, academics, non-profit administrators and other allies to advocate for the economic sovereignty of farmers of color, and to continue challenging racism, structural discrimination, and all forms of systemic oppression.
Our mission
Our mission is to serve as a resource hub that:
Advocates for farmers of color to directly participate in - and lead - the building of a fair food and farming system
Grows our collective representation
Provides direct financial support through our Farmer Justice Microgrant program
Sustains traditional agricultural knowledge through relevant technical assistance and skill building
Connects California farmers of color with all allies and opportunities - political and beyond.
