About Us
We are California farmers of color advocating for civil rights in agriculture
The California Farmer Justice Collaborative (CFJC) is a nonprofit founded by a group of farmers and advocates who came together in 2017 in a grassroots effort to pass
the Farmer Equity Act of 2017 (California Assembly Bill 1348)
- a landmark state law that directs the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) to better provide resources, outreach, technical assistance, and decision-making power to growers of color.
By adding a definition of “Socially Disadvantaged Farmer and Rancher” to the California Food and Agriculture Code, the Farmer Equity Act mandates the inclusion of these farmers in state agricultural policymaking and ensures equitable access to critical programs and resources.
As the stewards of the Farmer Equity Act, California Farmer Justice Collaborative is committed to ensuring legislation protects and supports farmers of color in California and beyond.
WE envision farmers of color as active participants and leaders in a fair food system for all.
Our mission is to serve as a resource hub for California farmers of color.
ADVOCACY - We advocate for farmers of color to directly participate in - and lead - the building of a fair food and farming system
REPRESENTATION - We grow collective representation for farmers of color in California and beyond
FINANCIAL SUPPORT - We provide direct financial support through our Farmer Justice Microgrant program
KNOWLEDGE - We sustain traditional agricultural knowledge through relevant technical assistance and skill building
CONNECTION - We connect California farmers of color with allies and opportunities
We unite farmers and allies to advocate for the economic sovereignty of farmers of color, and to continue challenging racism, structural discrimination, and all forms of systemic oppression. We envision farmers and land stewards of color centered at and directing a food and farming system that is built from a foundation of justice and equity.

Our Rural Justice Summit
Over the course of two days, the 2025 Rural Justice Summit saw nearly 300 attendees participate in this community power building event centering farmers of color. We nurtured relationship-building amongst attendees, uplifted issues faced by historically underserved communities stewarding land in California, brought together local leaders innovating solutions to those challenges, and shared good, local food. Through the 2025 Rural Justice Summit, we were able to redistribute nearly $30,000 to partnered farmers and land tenders. Click here to learn more about or Rural Justice Summit.
